Breast cancer in young women is a dreaded disease of bad prognosis, classically worse then for older wemen.
A local study was undertaken in Department of General Surgery, Korean Cancer Center Hospital to evaluate this notion. 176 cases aged 35 years or less were collected over 9 years from January 1980 to December 1988.
Chief complaints were painless lump and painful lump and bloody nipple discharge in orders.
The majority of symptom duration was 1 to 6 months. Left breast cancers were 56.5% upper outer quadrant was the most prevalent site(53.5%). Mammographic detection rate was only 45.7%. The most prevalent stage was stage II(39.8%) and I, II, III,
IV
in
orders. Histopathologically infiltrating ductal carcinoma was most common finidng. Estrogen receptor positivity by means of ER-ICA was only 26.5% in age 35 years or less but 51.3% over 35 years. Recurrence rate was 38.4% and most frequent
metastatic
site was bone. 5 year survival rates were as follows. Stage I was 70.9%, II was 45.8%, III was 35.3%, IV was 16.6%.
